Going back to school is a great way of achieving your career goals and finding fulfillment in life. One great thing about returning to college as an adult is that you now have a clearer idea of what your goals are, so you can focus better than your younger classmates.
1. Family responsibility
Obstacle
Family usually comes first. When most adult learners have to choose between family and school, they often go with the latter. You would rather miss your morning classes rather than leaving your sick child at home unattended. Missing many classes can get into the way of attaining your educational goals.
Solution
Make sure you communicate with your lecturer when family responsibilities come up. Once you sort the issue out, go to college and explain the issue face-to-face. Sending an email might not seem sincere, that is why you should make an effort to talk to your lecturer. Ask the tutor for a make-up class. Many professors are willing to help their students succeed.
2. Frustration with classes
Obstacle
At times going to school with a set goal might be an obstacle. For instance, if your goal is to acquire accountancy qualifications, you might feel frustrated if you have to fulfill the general degree requirements of natural sciences and humanities courses.
Solution
You have to sit through the frustrating classes. Everyone, including the younger students, have the same feeling. Focus on how the courses are related.
3. Feeling overwhelmed
Obstacle
Adult learners usually have more responsibilities than younger students. Juggling school, family and work can make you feel pressured.
Solution
Avoid biting off more than you can chew. Consider taking few units. Although doing this might make you longer than expected to finish school, your stable mental health will make it worthwhile. Also, don’t compare yourself with the other students. Remember that everyone’s journey is different.
